Hydropneumatic Absorbers
Hydropneumatic absorbers
Hydropneumatic absorbers are most commonly seen on vehicles as part of the suspension system. In fact, one of the most famous examples of hydropneumatic suspension is that used on Citroen’s for the last 60 years.
How The Hydropneumatic Absorber Works
Hydropneumatic absorbers have liquid and gas in them. The liquid is in the lower half of the chamber, separated from the top half via a diaphragm. The top half of the chamber has gas, usually nitrogen.
When the vehicle goes over a bump the absorber is forced to compact, smoothing the ride of the vehicle. This compresses the gas in the top decreasing the pressure of the liquid as it has more space to exist in. Once the bump has passed the pressure of the gas is higher than the liquid, forcing the absorber back down to balance the pressure between liquid and gas.
A two-way valve is usually used to encourage the movement of fluid at the critical time.
As the gas part absorbs the force of the hydropneumatic absorbers movement, it’s an effective way of controlling the ride of a vehicle, reducing the impact of road bumps, and giving the passengers a smooth ride.
Although Citroen is the most famous manufacturer, this type of suspension is used on all vehicles. It can be self-leveling or driver-variable.
Choosing the Right Hydropneumatic Absorbers
There are several key factors to consider when choosing hydropneumatic absorbers. Perhaps the most important is knowing what pressure you need it to operate at. The higher the pressure the stiffer the hydropneumatic absorber will be. This decreases its ability to absorb bumps in the road although it does improve the handling of the vehicle.
You’ll also need to know the weight of the vehicle, this is the force exerted on the hydropneumatic absorbers when they are in use. These variables will allow the manufacturer to calculate the size absorber required and manufacture it for you.
Of course, you need a manufacturer who understands hydropneumatic absorbers. SAIP S.R.L. is an Italian company with over 40 years of experience. They also have a variety of patents in the field of hydropneumatics and are ready to use their vast knowledge to help you. Whether you’re looking for a standard replacement or are designing a custom suspension system, they have the expertise you need.
With excellent customer service and knowledgeable staff, using SAIP S.R.L. is the logical choice when choosing hydropneumatic absorbers.
